Choosing Sunglasses

Sunglasses are becoming more important, both for eye protection and for fashion. Getting the right advice about both for the style and the lens is essential. The team at Blur is able to give you the right advice when choosing your sunglasses, and we able to provide ‘after sales’ service such as adjustments, tightening screws, replacement parts and warranty claims. We are also able to assist with choosing and fitting prescription sunglasses.

As sports vision specialists, we have expert knowledge about the application of sunglasses to particular sports. We are able to advise you about the brands and features that will best suit your particular requirements.

Here are a few tips about sunnies.

Lenses

  • All sunglasses should have 100% UV protection.
  • Sunglasses should comply with the Australian Standards. This ensures that the lenses offer good protection from damaging rays, minimize lens distortions and are suitable for the intended purpose.
  • For safety reasons, the lenses should be polycarbonate or plastic. If the lenses are glass, they MUST be chemically hardened.
  • If the sunglasses are to be used for active purposes (running, cycling etc), they should have adequate ventilation and be light and stable. We have an excellent range of sunglasses for the active sunglass wearer. Many models have features tailored to the individual requirements of specific sports or activities.
  • If the sunglasses will be used on reflective surfaces (eg boating, fishing, snow skiing etc), they should be polarized to cut out reflected glare. Mako and Maui Jim have an extensive range of polarized lenses.
  • Ensure that the tint is suitable for the purpose. The new fashion tints are great as all-purpose sunglasses, but may not be dark enough to stop the glare at the beach in the middle of the day. Similarly, a lens that is very dark may be difficult to use on a cloudy day, or when weather conditions are changeable. Adidas and Nike now have models with interchangeable lenses.
  • Always wet your sunglass lenses under a cool tap before cleaning. Stray dust, sand or salt particles can be rubbed across a dry lenses causing scratches.

Style

  • Wrap around sunglasses are most useful for those spending long hours out in the sun or for those who are particularly light sensitive. Spectacle prescriptions can be put into many wrap around sunglasses, but the lenses may be a little more expensive and may take a little long to be made. Ask for our advice on this matter.
  • Choosing a ‘look’ for sunglasses depends on how they will be used. General-purpose sunglass frames can be chosen based mainly on the way they look. This should take a number of factors into account, including your face shape, the prominence of facial features and colouring.
  • You should ensure that your sunglasses are adjusted to your face. This will ensure that they sit on your face straight, and don’t slide down.
  • Have the screws and general alignment of the sunglasses checked after each summer. This will ensure that they are comfortable, perform to expectation, and last as long as possible.
