Caring for spectacles
Looking
after your spectacles is a vital part of getting the most out
of them. It is important to remember that your lenses are precision
products that will not give optimum performance if they are
damaged or ‘out of alignment’.
Here are
a few tips on maintaining your spectacles:
- Always
make sure that your spectacles are properly adjusted. If your
frame is loose or crooked, you may not be able to see properly
(particularly if they are multifocals) or the lenses may get
damaged
Never try to adjust your own spectacles. This is a really
fast way of breaking them. Most frames need to be heated before
adjusting. Proper tools are needed to adjust a frame.
- Never
lay your spectacles face down. This will scratch the centre
of the lens.
Always take your spectacles off with 2 hands. This stops the
frame stretching and reduces the stress on the joints.
- Keep
your spectacles in a case when not using them. Where possible,
use a hard case, as this will offer more protection against
the spectacles being squashed .
- Like
a car, your spectacles need ‘servicing’ every 6 to 12 months.
This involves tightening screws, adjusting the fit and sonic
cleaning, and is done as part of our after sales service.
- Never
use abrasives or solvents on your frames or lenses. Most frame
materials and some lenses will be damaged beyond repair by
these substances. Avoid contact with acetone, ammonia, glue,
and hairspray .
- Never
expose your spectacles to excessive heat (eg the dash of the
car in summer), as this may stretch the frame and cause the
lenses to crack or craze.
- Remember
– no lens is scratch proof!!!
To clean
your spectacles:
- Use a
microfibre cloth to wipe away fingerprints and smudges.
- If lenses
are particularly dirty, use a lens spray and soft tissue to
clean, and then polish with your microfibre cloth.
- If there
is sand or grit on the lenses, wash under cool water and then
wipe off with a soft towel. Polish with the microfibre cloth.
- Avoid
wiping or rubbing dry lenses. This is usually when they scratch.
- Tissues
will leave quite a coarse dust on the lens. This makes the
lens feel dirty and may scratch a dry lens. Only use tissue
on a wet lens.
- Wash
your microfibre cloth regularly, to ensure peak performance.
